Examines the prevalence of carving & characteristics among 85 girls (14-18 yrs) who were in treatment for alcohol or drug abuse. 41 Ss (48%) stated that they had deliberately cut themselves on 1 or more occasions without suicidal intent. 12 (29%) stated that they deliberately cut themselves once or twice; 15 (36%) had done so 6 or more times. A prior suicide attempt had been made by 24 (59%) & 11 (27%) of the 41 had made 3 or more attempts. Guidelines for identifying & managing these patients.
