Analyzes underlying cognitive processes influencing movement toward self-destruction & uses clinical material to illustrate significant signs of suicide intention including a tendency toward isolation; substance abuse; low self-esteem & negative attitudes toward self; a sense of hopelessness & despair; guilt reactions & psychological pain; & progressive withdrawal from relationships & favored activities. A hostile thought process or “voice” was part of self-destructive tendencies in each person.
