Lack of tested diagnostic criteria on depression 2ndary to schizophrenia has lead to a misunderstanding of its relatively high frequency & its assoc. with poor outcome features such as impaired psychosocial functioning & suicide. Differential diagnosis is essential partly because the concept of schizophrenic depression as postpsychotic is not supported by evidence. Increased risk factors must be addressed but evidence indicates that 2ndary depression doesn’t respond to antidepressant medication.
