The Hobbema Native reserve community was studied to determine factors contributing to the unusually high suicide rate & to aid suicide prevention. Factors identified: a broken or weakened primary relationship in the family, lack of satisfying & effective communication between parent & child, transgenerational effects, alcohol & drug abuse, “toxic depressive crisis”, & the waste of human potential. Recommendations include crisis line service & imaginative educational approaches to counselling.
