Knowledge about suicide is often low & attitudes are often negative toward the suicidal person. The elderly are among the highest risk groups for suicidal behavior. The need for education & training among caregivers is discussed. Specific topics for training should include the dispelling of suicide myths, demographic high risk factors, recognition of warning signs, awareness of community resources, the variety of self-destructive behaviors & awareness of the grief experience of survivors.
