This study reviews the evaluation & treatment of patients with extensive self-inflicted shotgun wounds to the face. 5 cases are assessed as to reason for suicide, psychological reaction to facial reconstruction & potential for social rehabilitation. Mechanisms ofinjury, acute management & definitive surgical & psychiatric treatment programs are discussed. Survival is expected for most patients & carefully planned reconstruction must be coordinated with skilled psychiatric intervention. (KM)
