This presentation summarized a project designed to train the staff of a runaway shelter in Maine about suicide prevention & warning signs of suicidal behaviour. The presentation included a history of the project & gave the main reasons for adolescent runaway & suicidal behaviour. Results of a 1986 study showed that 20% of 350 runaways at 2 shelters had attempted suicide in the month prior to intake. Risk factors included gender, history of domestic violence, & friends or family members attempting suicide. The project produced a training videotape & booklet for shelter staff. (CM)
