A follow-up study compared functioning of certified adolescent psychiatric patients with that of a control group of voluntarily admitted adolescents. 2 main reasons for certification were suicidal behavior & psychotic symptoms. Most required further hospitalization during 5 years after discharge. Few, especially the certified, were functioning successfully. 5 certified patients (22%) committed suicide & personality disorder combined with major depression was important in suicide prediction.(KM)
