Based on an interview with the closest family member & using the Schedule of Affective Disorders & Schizophrenia (SADS), a retrospective psychiatric assessment & diagnostic classification was carried out for 217 suicides. Recent psychiatric illness was found in 81% of the cases & depression, in 63%. The prevalence of psychiatric disorders was similar to that of other studies for countries with lower suicide rates.
