The U.S. Centers for Disease Control reports that suicide was the 5th leading cause of lost potential life among Americans under age 65 in 1984. Suicide & homicide accounted for 50,000 deaths ; the former for 645,680 years of lost potential life. Firearms caused 57% of the total years for an average loss of 22 years per firearm suicide. Statistics are reported for lost potential years of life for homicide.
