An investigation of the suicide rate from 1974-1984 in England & Wales revealed an increase in rate for males of all ages, & a small decrease for young females. Male increase was greatest for those 25-54. Rates for poisoning by vehicle exhaust gas, by hanging, strangulation & suffocation have increased substantially during this period. In males, suicides by these methods now exceed those due to poisoning by solids & liquids. 6 Ref. (NBB)
