The Role of Female Autonomy in Suicide Among Portuguese Women
Ferreira de Castro E~~Martins I
Suicide rates for both sexes in Portugal & the district & city of Lisbon, from 1950-68, 1969-83 & over the 1950’s, 60’s, 70’s & 1980-83, were related to several variables. Since 1977, Female rates have risen significantly in Portugal & the Lisbon district, both in total & in professionally active age groups, unmarried & married & childless women. A rising trend of spring & summer suicides was confirmed. The growing autonomy of Portuguese women is still not widely reflected in their suicide rate.
