The purpose of this research was to obtain an operational definition of the construct “affiliation” for suicidal and nonsuicidal individuals. The hypothesis that suicide attempters are characterized by disaffiliative behavior and nonsuicidals by affiliative behaviors was tested in a sample of suicidals and a like number of nonsuicidals. Scales used included the FIRO, the SPPFT questionnaire, and the GZTS. Analysis of variance methodology yielded results supporting the initial hypothesis.(NBB)
