110 patients with diagnoses of major depressive disorders were assessed for present or recent suicidal ideation & behavior, & for suicidal acts before current depression. Results indicate that all 3 monoamine metabolites & their interactions are involved in various aspects of suicidality in unipolar patients. Current hypercortisolism was found in those who had tried to commit dangerous suicides earlier in life. Bipolar patients had significantly more, & more dangerous, attempts earlier in life.
