This letter to the editor discusses the seemingly dichotomous positions & approaches of suicide-prevention & suicide-advocacy groups. The 2 groups generally direct their attention to different populations & it is suggested that genuine interaction & exchange is needed between the 2 groups. Suicide prevention can provide the background scientific view for a careful look at suicide in the area of terminal illness, while suicide-advocacy insists that individual interests are primary. (LH)
