The distribution of psychiatric diagnoses is examined in an effort to explain (a) the rising suicide rate among young women & (b) the overall lower rate of suicide among women compared to men. Results indicate that the overall lower suicide rate for women & the rising suicide rate for young people of both sexes may be partially explained by the changing patterns of substance abuse in the population as as whole.
