Proportional mortality of actors and actresses was studied because cancers of many sites have been linked to hair dyes and cosmetics which actors use frequently. Death records for white male and female members of Actors’ Equity and Screen Actors’ Guild were compared with U.S. mortality rates. Males had a proportional mortality rate for suicide of 1.58; this rate was 2.02 among females. The proportion of deaths by suicide was six times higher in California than in New York.
