Official Finnish statistics for the period 1971 to 1980 reveal that the overall mortality of male doctors is lower than that of other economically active men but similar or higher than that of men in other professions. However, the suicide rate for male doctors is double that of other professions. These findings coincide with those of several other western countries. It is suggested that a possible major occupational hazard for doctors is that of mental strain. HA
