This paper reviews the social conditions of suicides in Poland from 1951-82, based on statistical data registered with the Central Statistical Office of Poland. The author found that women have a low suicide rate compared to men; that rates of suicide are higher in rural than in urban areas & that suicide often occurs after a loss (e.g. widowhood or divorce). As in other countries, suicides in Poland increased during social crises & decreased in periods of strong social integration. (5 refs.)
