Chronic Alcoholism in Relation to Attempted or Effected Suicide – A Long Term Study

Investigated is the relationship between chronic alcoholism & attempted suicide in a long-term study of 436 patients admitted to hospital for treatment of alcoholism during the period Jan.1976-Dec.1978. 356 patients remained under observation for more than 48 months. 3% (13patients) committed suicide &15.8% (69) had attempted suicide before admission. Findings indicate that only a small proportion of alcoholics commit or attempt suicide. 18 refs. 13 tables. (NBB)
