Provided is a view of suicide in Norway from the perspective of sociocultural history. The influences of history, religion, culture, harsh climate, economics & form of government are examined to determine the extent to which they are protective factors & therefore affect suicide rates. Comparisons are made to other Nordic countries. Attitudes toward suicide are explored in Norwegian literature. 28 refs. (NBB)
