The suicide of at least 6 youths aged 12-17, housed in California juvenile detention centers, prompted the California legislature to approve a 1984 resolution to force the Youth & Adult Correction Agency to investigate suicide prevention procedures & make recommendations for improvement. Correction agency officials felt the first action that should be taken is the appointment of a suicide prevention coordinator. Other recommendations were made.
