From 1974 to 1984 there have been 18 suicides at UCLA: 6 students, 4 hospital patients, 3 staff members; 5 were from off-campus. The modal suicide method was jumping (9), followed by hanging (3). 50% of the suicides left notes. A result of studying these suicides was the appointment of a Suicide Prevention Task Force by the university chancellor. The Task Force was instrumental in having barriers erected where jumps had occurred & initiating a series of campus-wide education programs.
