The authors review studies related to the cause, diagnosis & treatment of suicide in adolescents & young adults. The two- to three-fold increase in suicide rates for these groups over the past 25 years is examined from epidemiological, individual & biopsychosocial perspectives. The results of an epidemiological study carrried out by the authors in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, are summarized. (47 refs)
