This epidemiologic study of alcohol abuse examines the role alcohol plays in accidents, crime & suicide. The effect of alcohol abuse on women, families, adolescents, the elderly & special populations including Native Americans, Alaskans, Hispanics, blacks & Asians is discussed. Alcoholics are at high risk for suicide: 15 to 64% of suicide attempters & 80% of suicide victims had been drinking at the time of the event. Recent interpersonal loss may be a predictor of suicide among alcoholics. (NBB)
