The authors introduce this article by reviewing attitudes toward suicide throughout history & discussing the role attitudes played in the formation of the Los Angeles Suicide Prevention Center. The 5 aims of the Center are outlined–to save lives, to collect information about suicide, to provide a model for suicide programs, to provide information about suicide & to reduce the limiting taboos about suicide. The clinical, research, education & training activities of the center are discribed.(NBB)
