This survey of 204 jails & 24 youth detention centres in Florida indicates that the level of health care serices generally depends upon the health resources of the supporting community & the characteristics of its health care delivery system. A major concern is the large number of non-medical personnel who make judgmental decisions on inmates’ health matters. Among inmates alcoholism, drug abuse & mental illness are of great importance. Rates of inmate suicide show the importance of prevention.
