This study surveyed deaths that have occured while in police custody in metropolitan Dade County, Miami, Fla. from 1956-82. Results indicated that natural disease–predominantly cardiocerebral vascular & alcohol related–was most common, followed by suicides & accidents. Most suicides occurred in the younger, primarily white group. Hanging was the most common method. The author states that the degree of supervision & monitoring given the prison population will determine the frequency of suicide.
