This article describes an alternative to psychiatric hospital admission for those in crisis who are suicidal risks. The Emergency Treatment Unit of the Connecticut Mental Health Centre, run jointly by the State & Yale University, offers a short-term program limited to 3 days for crisis-ridden patients who are sufficiently disturbed to require emergency care away from home. A specially trained team provides intensive verbal & drug therapy & 30 days of follow-up care & consultation. (NBB)
