Among the major psychotic illnesses which are academically crippling to university students, most fall into the broad category of schizophrenia. A study of admissions for the period 1956-1973 (18 academic sessions) revealed 0.51% (75) of 14652 freshmen developed overt schizophrenia. The attrition rate (including 5 suicides) was as high as 66.67%. The author suggests schizophrenics be discouraged from entering institutions of higher learning & be directed toward less traumatic occupations. (NBB)
