The clinical picture of depression in children 6 to 12 years of age is described. Recognition of depressed affect in children can be difficult. In addition to dysphoria, these children frequently have lower self esteem, a reduced capacity of fun, massive guilt, social withdrawal, impaired schoolwork, excessive fatique, psychomotor retardation, & morbid or suicidal ideation.
