Psychiatric impairment in chronic hemodialysis patients is higher than the rate in the general population, & higher in adults than in children. This brief review of the literature on the incidence of psychiatric maladjustment in hemodialysis patients indicates a need for primary preventive psychiatric treatment in dialysis clinics.
