Suicidal gestures by anyone are important cries for help, and should never be treated lightly. To ignore or ridicule the person about their suicidal gesture could trigger further attempts. Always assume the suicidal person welcomes rescue, despite the tremendous amount of ambivalence they exhibit. Patient listening is the first requirement. Helping the suicidal person talk themselves out of the situation is the last. (GW)
