None of the eleven MMPI scales satisfactorily differentiates suicidal patients in an adequate manner. One study or another has found that most of the scales differentiate suicidal patients from others under some conditions. The authors argue for the use of the MMPI to identify suicidal episodes, the anxiety laden, panic filled period which precedes many suicides. Comparison of two groups of completed suicides yields one difference significant at the .05 level. (JS)
