This paper reviews previous studies on the subject and introduces new data. Standard mortality ratios (SMRs) reflecting suicide are given, demonstrating high figures for single women doctors, male physicians, and doctors’ wives (in ascending order). SMR’s for cirrhosis and accidental deaths appear also in tables and are contrasted with other professions. A discussion including possible preventive measures is offered.(TG)
