State court rulings on hospital liability for patient suicide show great variation from state to state. Too many precautions destroy the patient’s self esteem and hamper recovery, while too much freedom may result in suicide. A number of cases are cited to show how hospitals and their employees can cope with this calculated risk and safeguard against being found liable.
