74 suicide attempters in Penang, Malaysia were studied. Differences in incidence, motivations & methods were found among ethnic groups. A higher incidence in females might be explained by a finding which suggests that they may face greater role conflicts. Urban migration was associated with a high incidence of attempts among Chinese subjects. The author states that professionals, other than psychiatrists, have a role in the prevention & management of suicidal behaviours. (5 refs.)
