Records of the application interviews of 4 psychiatric residents ultimately known or suspected of having committed suicide & 110 randomly selected residents were retrospectively reviewed. An operational definition of an abnormal mental status exam was devised which was positive in 3 of the 4 residents who suicided but in only 5 of the 110 randomly selected resident applicants. This is significant at the 0.0001 level by Chi-square analysis.
