The etiology & symptomatology of suicide is explored from the perspective of a nurse whose friend attempted suicide. Theories of suicidal behaviour are described, including those of Durkheim, Kobler & Stotland, Freud, Farber & Dublin. The author outlines her own theory of 10 steps in the development of suicide. Clues of impending suicide, especially those set forth by Shneidman, are reviewed. Suicide attempts by a patient & by the author’s friend are described by way of example. (9 refs.) (RM)
