28 attempters (A) & 28 who had made recent suicide threats (T), all hospitalized males, were compared with 28 depressed but nonsuicidal male patients (P) & 31 nonhospitalized males(N) on appreciation of humor stimuli. Cartoon themes included “self-” & “other-punishing”, “suicidal” & “nonsense”. A & T found “self-punishing” & “suicidal” theme cartoons less amusing than did P or N. There were no differences among groups on the appreciation of “other-punishing” & “nonsense” cartoons. (KM)
