Independent Dimensions of Depression: A Factor Analysis of Three Self-Report Depression Measures

To investigate whether depression measurement instruments measure the same subaspects of depression a factor analysis was performed on the items of the Beck Depression Inventory & the Lubin Depression Adjective Check Lists. Ss were college students & correctional institution inmates. 4 clearly interpretable multimeasure factors resulted from the Varimax rotation. Results suggets that both intensisty & frequency of symptoms ought to be considered to obtain a best objective meas. of depression.
