Presents a case history of a 24-yr-old male who attempted suicide in order to demonstrate the importance of a conceptual framework that will prevent the exacerbation of guilt feelings during psychoanalysis. Emphasis is placed on the initial phase of therapy during which the therapist must concentrate on listening & giving interpretations which help relieve some the patient’s guilt & self-hatred. The relationship between guilt & ego mechanisms is noted.
