Findings in creativity research indicate that gifted children often have difficulty evolving a self-concept. Parents & teachers who suppress new ideas & espouse negative attitudes are responsible for much of this problem. Gifted children use 3 basic patterns in searching for identity: conformity, rebellion & creative expression. Those who take none of these alternatives often develop drug addiction, suicidal behavior or mental illness. 5 Refs. (LH)
