Figures given by the Registrar-General for suicidal deaths associated with maternity are “surprisingly low”. However, in many psychiatrists’ experience suicidal attempts occur during pregnancy, & are equally common after childbirth. The case of a 23-yr-old who attempted suicide in the course of labour, is described, along with family & antecedent history & subssequent progress. Factors present in the case are compared to those described in other papers. (RM)
