The suicide rates in Finland have in recent years been among the highest in the world. Helsinki, Finland’s capital, is a city of 550,000 inhabitants. This paper is a preliminary report of a study of the suicides committed in Helsinki in the years 1956-1965 by persons who in some phase of their life had been patients of psychiatric hospitals or outpatient clinics.
