This article presents a review of the death certificates forthe years 1969, 1970 & 1971 in Newfoundland. Overall, the suicide rate was higher than that expected from official statistics. The male to female ratio for suicide was found in Newfoundland to be 3.75:1 vs. that in Canada of 2.58:1. Age-corrected suicide rates were very low in the age groups below 24 & above 65. Firearms were used in just over one-third of all cases. There was a trend for suicides to occur during thewarmest months.
