3 aspects of the therapeutic intervention with suicidal patients are discussed: 1. responses of the therapist (anxiety, increased interest, restraint, irritation, avoidance, denial & passivity) 2. the needs of the patient (excessive attachment, regression, dependence, sensitivity to rejection, aggression, low self esteem & despair) & 3. involvement of significant others. Suggestions for suicide risk assessment are made. Therapeutic strategies are discussed.(RA)
