An epidemiological study of injuries revealed that hospitalized & fatal injury rates among Hopi Indians in 1979-80 were 12/1000 per year. Falls, motor vehicle crashes,self-inflicted injuries & assaults were the leading causes of injuries. Suicides & crashes were the leading causes of death. The age group 15-19 constituted 25% of the population & accounted for 46% of all injuries. Prevention strategies based on principles of injury control are recommended.
