Guidelines for suicide intervention in penal settings have been inadequate. Several precipitants to suicide are remarked: family problems, indeterminate sentences, and abuse by inmates or officials. Clinical symptoms of depression are outlined, emphasizing the importance of treating manipulative attempts seriously. Suicide prevention is predicated on swift referral & appropriate emergency treatment for distressed inmates.
