A survey of 200 women indicates that divorce can lead to depression & feelings of hopelessness. Emotional stress is compounded by inadequate role development which prevents integration into social structures. Furthermore, women’s early socialization favours passivity & existing for others, which causes a dilemma resulting in hopelessness, depression, & numerous suicide attempts. These attempts may serve to communicate a plea to society for an answer to the problems the women face. (51 refs.)
